  • What do you think Martin Luther King would have done if blogging and social media had been around in the 1960s?
  • MLK Represents More Than a Dream
  • Martin Luther King Jr. probably would have used social media and blogging as effective tools to further the Civil Rights Movement. He was well-known for his ability to engage audiences with his writings and speeches, and social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, and blogging sites would have quickly grown his audience to millions. He could have reached people all across the world directly with his message of equality, justice, and nonviolence rather than depending only on marches, rallies, and the printed press.
  • Additionally, social media may have been used to more effectively plan events like the March on Washington. MLK might have gathered supporters more quickly by using hashtags and viral campaigns. His speeches, such as "I Have a Dream," could have been live-streamed, enabling viewers worldwide to feel the impact of his message in real time.
  • How did the personal blogging platform — and then Facebook and Twitter — change the world of mass communication?
  • Facebook Twitter Icons PNG & SVG Design ...
  • The emergence of personal blogging sites, which were later followed by Facebook and Twitter, completely transformed how people communicate globally. People can now share their ideas and experiences with a large audience without needing permission from traditional media thanks to blogging platforms like Blogger.
  • With the introduction of Facebook and Twitter, communication became even more rapid and collaborative. Facebook made it simple for users to interact with one another and share ideas, images, and posts in a way that felt intimate while also being accessible to a wide audience. Twitter became a platform for real-time news and rapid updates, however. With the creation of hashtags, it became easy to organize discussions.
  • These platforms changed mass communication by giving power to individuals instead of just large media companies. They made it possible for anyone to share their ideas or even go viral. However, they also created problems like the spread of fake news and despite these challenges, these platforms transformed how we share and consume information forever.
  • What were the things you found enjoyable about keeping up a blog this semester?
  • What I really enjoyed about keeping a blog this semester was having a space to share my thoughts without it feeling super formal.  It was cool to write in my own voice and not worry about sticking to strict academic rules. Knowing that anyone could look at my blog also made me reflect on things more deeply than I expected, which was kind of rewarding.

Anti War Blog Post

After checking out a couple of anti-war websites, I was really surprised by the strength of the arguments presented, especially since I had never come across these sites before. Antiwar.com focuses on promoting non-interventionism in U.S. foreign policy and provides a platform for a range of voices opposing military intervention. On the other hand, The American Conservative aims to critique unchecked power in both government and business, advocating for individual freedoms. These sites got me thinking about why we don’t hear more anti-war perspectives in mainstream discussions.

It seems that anti-war websites rarely make it into mainstream media in the U.S., largely because the government tends to push back against these viewpoints. This is one reason why sites like Antiwar.com and The American Conservative are often overlooked. The government’s control over media means they can filter out content that challenges their narrative, which ultimately limits the public's exposure to these alternative opinions.

The U.S. government tends to be pro-war and pro-military, wanting to keep anti-war sentiments in the shadows to protect the nation's image. There’s a concern that if more people were exposed to anti-war views, it could complicate the public’s understanding of the reasons behind military action.

A significant factor in this issue is the financial aspect of war. Conflict often brings economic benefits, and the government is deeply invested in maintaining economic growth. Increased military spending can stimulate the economy, and wars can provide access to valuable resources that boost a nation’s economic power. Additionally, winning a war can improve a country’s standing in international trade. These are some of the motivations that countries consider when engaging in war, which makes it seem beneficial from their perspective.

EOTO #1 Review

EOTO Review

The presentation on the evolution of photography by Chris Jones was both insightful and engaging, highlighting how far we've come from the ancient camera to today’s digital mirrorless cameras. It is interesting to me since I am also in the world of videography and cameras. It kicked off by explaining the history of the camera, an early optical device used as far back as 400 BCE. It was fascinating to learn how this simple concept of projecting light through a small hole laid the groundwork for all future image capture.

Then it moved into the 19th century with Louis Daguerre and his invention of the "daguerreotype" in 1839, strange name. I appreciated the emphasis on how complex the process was, using heavy chemicals that made photography a challenge, especially for everyday people. This set the stage for George Eastman’s Kodak camera in 1888. By introducing flexible film and a user-friendly design, Eastman truly democratized photography. It was interesting to see that it transformed photography from a niche profession into something anyone could participate in.

The presentation also covered the digital transformation, notably with the Kodak DCS 100 in 1991, which was the first commercial digital camera. This innovation allowed instant feedback and editing, completely changing how we capture and share images. I found it especially relevant how smartphone cameras have now taken this a step further. They’re practically everywhere, equipped with high-resolution capabilities that let us document our lives instantly.

However, the presentation didn't shy away from the challenges we face today, like privacy concerns and the pressure of creating the perfect online image. Overall, it highlighted how photography has not only evolved as a technology but also significantly impacted our culture and communication. It's incredible to think about the journey from those early cameras to how we document our lives now, it really shows how intertwined photography is with our daily experience.

EOTO #2 Cord Cutting

  • Beyond a simple definition, what are the implications? What might be good, what might be bad?

Cord cutting refers to reducing or eliminating public funding for traditional media outlets, such as public broadcasting, in favor of private or digital media platforms. While this shift might seem beneficial at first glance, it carries a range of implications for society, particularly regarding access to information and media diversity.

On the positive side, one of the main arguments for cutting public funding is cost savings. Governments can redirect funds previously allocated to public broadcasting toward other essential services, such as education or healthcare. Additionally, encouraging private media can foster competition and innovation, potentially leading to higher-quality content. With a more diverse media landscape, audiences may gain access to a broader range of voices and perspectives that public media might not offer.

However, there are significant downsides to consider. One major concern is the potential decline in the quality and availability of journalism. Public broadcasters often provide impartial news coverage, which is vital for a well-informed public. Without this support, we may see an increase in bias, as private media outlets prioritize profit over public interest. Moreover, the fragmentation of media could make it more challenging for individuals to find reliable information.

Cord Cutting has changed Political Advertising - This link shows a youtube video on how cord cutting has changed political advertising

  • How might it affect society as a whole?

The impact of cord cutting is not uniform across society. Different demographic segments will experience these changes in varying ways. For instance, wealthier individuals typically have greater access to diverse media options, including subscriptions to reputable news sources. In contrast, low-income individuals may struggle to access reliable information, creating a disparity in awareness about critical social and political issues. This gap in access can deepen existing inequalities.

  • How might it affect different segments differently — rich/poor, old/young, male/female, gay/straight, majority/minority?

Age is another significant factor. Older generations often rely on traditional news sources and may be particularly affected by cuts to public broadcasting. They might find it challenging to adapt to new platforms and could miss out on crucial information. On the other hand, younger people, who are more accustomed to digital media, might be more adaptable but still face difficulties in finding credible sources among the vast amount of information available online.

Gender dynamics also play a role in how cord cutting affects different segments of society. Men and women might experience changes in media representation differently. While male interests are often well-covered in private media, women may find their perspectives underrepresented, especially if public media that highlight women’s issues are cut. Similarly, LGBTQ+ individuals might lose valuable representation and advocacy if public outlets that support their visibility are eliminated.

  • How might it affect you? Your family and friends? Your generation?

The implications of government cord cutting extend to personal experiences as well. For many of us, access to reliable information shapes our understanding of the world and influences our discussions with family and friends. A reduction in public broadcasting could lead to increased skepticism about news sources, particularly among younger generations who are already navigating a complex media landscape. This might affect family conversations about current events, potentially leading to more polarized views.

In conclusion, while the concept of cord cutting in government might seem appealing in terms of cost savings and promoting private media, it raises significant concerns about the quality of journalism and access to information. The effects vary widely across different demographics, highlighting inequalities in access and representation. As we move further into a digital age, understanding these implications is crucial for creating an informed and engaged society.

Age of AI

Watching the documentary on the implications of AI left me with a mix of fascination and concern. It’s clear that the future of work is being changed in real-time, and understanding this evolution is crucial for my generation. Here are some key takeaways that stood out to me.

One major theme was the disproportionate impact of job automation on women, particularly in  positions like cashiers. I hadn’t fully grasped how specific demographics would bear the brunt of job losses due to AI advancements. This realization showed the importance of including gender equity in conversations about technology and employment. The documentary shows that as efficiency rises, so does the risk of widening the already significant gap between different socioeconomic groups. This reality is a reminder that technological progress is not always equitable.

Another crucial point emphasized was the urgent need for "reskilling and upskilling" workers to thrive in a future increasingly dominated by AI. While it’s exciting to think about the new opportunities that technology can create, the economic barriers many face in acquiring these skills are concerning. It raises the question: who will be able to take advantage of these new roles? This disparity could lead to a workforce divided not only by skill level but also by economic status, further stretching existing inequalities.

The documentary also addressed the rising inequality fueled by AI, which was both surprising and frightening. It revealed how AI contributes to wealth concentration among those who already have capital. Experts highlighted the moral implications of this wealth gap, which made me reflect on the  responsibilities of those creating AI technologies. It’s alarming to think about how unregulated AI could lead to a society where a small elite controls most resources and power, leaving the majority behind.

The discussion around surveillance capitalism was another eye-opener. I was shocked to learn how tech giants exploit AI to gather and monetize user data, often without individuals’ full awareness. The Cambridge Analytica scandal, in particular, illustrated the significant implications for data privacy. The video emphasized the need for consumer control over personal data, highlighted by Alastair Mactaggart's efforts to introduce privacy legislation in California. While it’s encouraging to see movements toward regulation, the ongoing battle for privacy rights in the digital age feels daunting.

The geopolitical dynamics explored in the documentary added another layer of complexity. The extensive use of AI for state surveillance in China, especially against the Uighur population, it very scary. It raises critical questions about human rights and the global spread of authoritarian surveillance practices. The idea that countries might align with either the U.S. or China in a divided tech landscape is concerning, it suggests that our freedoms could be dictated by geopolitical rivalries.

In conclusion, while the documentary highlighted many alarming realities, it also offered a glimmer of hope, especially through Kai-Fu Lee’s perspective on the potential for AI to promote human flourishing if managed responsibly. As we navigate this AI-driven future, it’s essential to engage in meaningful conversations about equity, privacy, and the ethical use of technology. The discussions prompted by this documentary are vital as we shape a future that prioritizes democratic values and social justice, ensuring that advancements benefit everyone, not just a select few.

Diffusions of Innovations

Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles (EVs) have exploded in popularity recently, and it’s fascinating to analyze this trend through the Diffusion of Innovations Theory by Everett Rogers. This theory helps explain how new ideas and technologies spread, and it really sheds light on why so many people are hopping on the EV bandwagon while others are still hesitant.

Why Did EVs Catch On?

At first, electric vehicles faced a lot of skepticism. Concerns about range, charging, and performance were major roadblocks. But then, as climate change became a hot topic and government incentives rolled out, things started to change. Companies like Tesla emerged as innovators, proving that EVs could be stylish, fast, and practical. This caught the attention of early adopters who are willing to take a risk on new technology. Their excitement and positive experiences fueled a growing interest among the general public.

The Role of Early Adopters

Early adopters play a crucial role in spreading new technology. They tend to be more open to change and often share their experiences on social media. As more people saw their friends and influencers driving electric cars, it created a buzz. Plus, with the expansion of charging stations and improvements in battery technology, the perceived downsides of owning an EV started to fade. It’s kind of like a snowball effect, the more people that adopt, the more attractive it looks to those sitting on the fence.

What About Late Adopters?

Of course, not everyone is eager to jump into the EV scene. Late adopters tend to be more cautious and may wait for the technology to prove itself. They often look for lower prices and more established reliability before making the switch. Laggards, who are really resistant, might stick to their gas cars out of a sense of familiarity or skepticism about the new tech. It’s interesting how personal values and social circles can really shape these decisions.

Downsides of Electric Vehicles

Despite their many benefits, EVs do have some downsides. Battery production can be environmentally harmful, and the charging infrastructure is still catching up. For people living in more rural areas, finding a charging station can be a hassle. Additionally, while EVs save money on fuel and maintenance in the long run, the initial purchase price can be a barrier for many.

Personal Decision-Making

When I think about whether to get an EV, it really comes down to weighing the pros and cons. Sure, the upfront cost is higher, but then I consider the savings on gas and maintenance over time. Plus, driving an electric car feels like I’d be doing my part for the environment, which is important to me…who am I kidding. I WILL NEVER GET AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE!!! People can say all they want about the climate change and how EV’s are our future, but not for me. What brings me happiness is feeling and hearing the power of an American built V8. Electric cars take the fun out of driving making it feel like a chore.

Plan For Gas Cars - This link shows how some states are planning to phase out gas cars.

Weighing Costs and Benefits

In my mind, it’s all about balancing the costs and benefits. While the initial investment might be steep, I believe the long-term savings could make an EV worth it in people eyes. Plus, with the increasing awareness of our carbon footprints, going electric seems like a responsible choice. As more people think about these factors, I can see EVs continuing to gain traction.

In conclusion, electric vehicles perfectly illustrate the principles of the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The combination of innovative technology, early adopters, and a societal shift toward sustainability has helped EVs become mainstream. While challenges remain, the benefits of both environmental and economic factors make a compelling case. As we navigate our choices, the appeal of driving an EV is likely to grow.

Blog 5 - Privacy, Online and Off

  • How do these issues affect you? You friends and family?

Privacy invasion and cyberharassment are huge issues that affect us all, as well as our friends and family. Juan Enriquez talks about how our personal info is getting tracked and exposed through social media and tech. He calls these “electronic tattoos,” and they make it hard to escape being watched. This constant surveillance can make anyone feel like they’re always under a microscope. It’s not just personal anxiety though, our friends and family are affected too. They might deal with the stress of having their privacy compromised or deal with the fallout of having their personal info exposed.

Darieth Chisolm’s story is a powerful example of how devastating cyberharassment can be. Her experience with revenge porn, where explicit photos were shared online without her consent, shows the intense emotional toll that this kind of abuse can take. It doesn’t just hurt the victims; their friends and family often deal with the stress and worry about their own digital safety while trying to support the person affected.

  • What should the government be doing about these issues?

The government really needs to step up. When it comes to privacy and surveillance, we need stricter laws to protect our data from being collected and used without our consent. They should also regulate how law enforcement uses surveillance tools to prevent abuse. Christopher Soghoian highlights the importance of encryption and how it helps keep our conversations private. We need laws that support strong encryption to protect our communications from being intercepted. For issues like cyberharassment, there should be solid laws against revenge porn with real penalties for offenders. Plus, there should be more support for victims and stricter rules for online platforms to hold them accountable for what gets shared.

  • What can we do to protect ourselves from invasions of our privacy?

On a personal level, we can protect ourselves by being careful about what we share online and keeping our privacy settings up to date. Using encrypted messaging apps, as Soghoian suggests, is also a good way to keep our conversations private. Staying informed about digital privacy and taking steps to secure our personal data is crucial. If someone falls victim to cyberharassment, they should act quickly to protect their digital content, report the abuse, and seek help from organizations that deal with digital abuse. By taking these steps and being aware of what Enriquez, Soghoian, and Chisolm have shared, we can better protect ourselves and support those affected by these issues.
